Welcome to the world of words

If a child knew that means to carry, would they ever wonder what a er does?

This is morphological awareness in action, one of the strongest predictors of literacy outcomes.

See it in the works

We turned decades of reading research into fun characters, books, games and toys.

The science of words. The art of storytelling.

The Lex The Saurus Collection

It takes a village. Ours is called Locus Crocus.

The stray pencil lines are left in on purpose. Proudly. We call them lifelines, our little proof that a human, not a machine, brought our characters to life.

A note for early readers: these books are in active testing while we validate the format, so sizes, bindings and details may still change, and we reserve the right to change them. Fancy helping shape them? Sign up to test →

The Stories

Fun, plain-English stories about the research behind reading, where words come from, and how we make Lex The Saurus.
Interesting science and history updates for everyone.

The science behind the magic

Decades of research say it works. Our toughest critics, the kids, prove it.

Children can split a word into its parts in a split second, 170 milliseconds, to be precise. And how well a child knows those parts predicts how well they read. Reading well then compounds, into subjects well beyond literacy. So making word parts fun to play with does not just produce a lifetime of dad jokes and puns, it helps struggling readers most of all. Which is why Lex The Saurus set out to help children play with words at home, while they are having fun.

Swiss by design

We care about the small stuff.

We sit in Riehen, on the edge of Basel, where Switzerland, Germany and France meet within a tram ride. Children here grow up moving between languages every day, and that is where the idea began.

SWISS DESIGN
01

Drawing by hand

All the drawings are hand sketched by Lettuce, our illustrator, here in Basel. Each villager is redrawn until the expression is right. No AI, no stock library, no shortcuts.

02

Writing with the evidence

Every word is checked against the research before it reaches a page, and every line is counted syllable by syllable, so reading it aloud carries the pattern on its own.

03

Our smalls, your bigs

Small people, small decisions, small details, all of it in service of something big. From the safety of our books and the partners we choose, to your data sitting on Swiss servers.
